I Worry that Your Emotional Support Dog Has Anxiety

"Working Dog - Do Not Pet"

Whaaa!

I worry that service dogs have anxiety.

It's the job.

After all, job stress is a bitch.

Like many health care providers, service animals spend most of their days among the sick, depressed and anxious.

The work may be personally rewarding, but can lead to consternation and canine distress.

Caregiver burnout is real.

RUMINATIONS...

WHILE WAITING IN THE SERVICE ANIMAL RELIEF AREA AT THE AIRPORT

  • The fire hydrant is Facebook for dogs.

  • Why is the doggie pit stop smack next to the "Party Fowl Hot Chicken" stand?

And near the rowdy local brews and boozy slushie bar?

It's a bummer for "Skippy" - he can't party - he's working.

Fear of Flying

  • "My trusty therapy dog seems to be urinating quite often, perhaps it's nerves."

  • He's probably not fond of flying.

  • He would much rather ride by private vehicle, preferably with his head hanging out the back window, mouth open, ears flapping in the wind.

Treatments

Treats! Lots of treats! Dogs love their treats!
Perhaps what he needs is his own comfort animal. Perhaps a miniature horse.
How about a kid to play with?
Duh.
Snooze time in a calming dog bed.
A weighted pet vest.
A bucket of Valerian root.
A Prozac prescription.
Acupuncture. Biofeedback. Psychotherapy.
A VR set!
Or... maybe a sabbatical in a tropical climate.

All work and no play makes Skippy a dull boy.
All pets are emotional support animals.
